read write prompt #36: ekphrastic extravaganza
fibonacci, by Rick Mobbs [not a] Fib She lives in a shell, a nautilus shell, a miraculous pearly husk. She lives in the shell with a light. The light is alive, it shimmers in the iridescent glow inside the shell. The shell curves in a marvelous spiral. These are her chambers. She lives in light. This week's prompt was ekphrastic extravaganza. Here is Christine's article on ekphrastic poetry. Here is a Wikipedia article on fibonacci poetry, which this actually isn't; I

Look At The Clock !
I told you my darling was a precocious reader. For the last five or six years she's had bedtime stories read to her, and we've pretty much done the 'classic' kids's classics - Magic Faraway Tree, A.A. Milne, Beatrix Potter, Wind in the Willows, Little Wooden Horse, Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson, Treasure Island (twice), Lewis Carroll, Moonfleet, King Arthur's Knights, Robin Hood, Arabian Nights, Oliver Twist... she liked poetry too - the Nancy Bell and Ancient Mariner sparked an

Psychiatrists in the News
A famous psychiatrist has been featured prominently in the news headlines this week: (CNN) -- Radovan Karadzic, whose Interpol charges listed "flamboyant behavior" as a distinguishing characteristic, was a practicing psychiatrist who came to be nicknamed the "Butcher of Bosnia." Twice indicted in 1995 by the U.N. International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Karadzic faces charges of genocide, complicity in genocide, extermination, murder, willful killing, persecutions, deportation,

Endings and Beginnings
My real name is Seth. That is as good as you're going to receive. My name is Seth, and I am twenty-five years old. I arrive from a tiny town in rural Michigan, on the shores of Lake Huron. I am an aspiring writer. I consider myself a follower of Zen Buddhist philosophy. I have a wife of three years, whom I adore very much. We have no kids. In the spring of 2004, I enlisted in the United States Army. At the time, the war in Iraq was still in its early stages, and I had a number of friends--som

African American Spirituals and the Mormon Pioneers
In honor of the 160th anniversary of the Saints entering the Salt Lake Valley, I would like to explore the relationship between two of the most profound spiritual movements of the 19th century: ante-bellum African American spirituals and the rise of Mormonism. While the vast majority of work with regard to African Americans and early Mormonism has focused on the explicit role that African Americans played in Mormonism, and LDS attitudes to African Americans, I would like to examine some shared

(0) comments Friday, July 18, 2008 poets write poems, I guess. writers write. it took me a while to admit with confidence that I was a writer. that producing whatever shitload of work, crappy as it might have been, was not confirmation enough. I think Dickinson had 4 poems published while alive, as you know, and Rossetti pumped Blake to life, did he not. I kept keyboard and pen busy for several years before I accepted that I was a writer, and not just that I wrote poems: I was a poet. well, a

Take Wing
Oh! fly away man of words you make me giggle great gobs of jolly and mirth You jeer me and cheer me and seed bouquets of words not meant to grow in the same soil their verdant tendrils reaching for heaven finding mere earth You catapult my thoughts beyond their limits over the stars and to the lyrical gauzy world of what if? why not? and will be And I cannot feel tethered or torn old or pained in your presence… only watch my soul take Wing copyright 2008

Introducing Me
Introducing Me July 24th, 2008 Hey. It’s great to be on board with an insideadog residency gig, and I’m really looking forward to the next couple of weeks. I have to admit that it’s slightly intimidating following on from John Marsden, but I think I’ll be OK. I should introduce myself. I’m from the Blue Mountains, where I live with my wife Vicki (also known as Frou-frou - it’s a longish and not terribly interesting story) and my daughters April and Holly, who are 15 and 12 respectively. I a

You know you’re growing up when…
I’m only 28, but I’ve been feeling very old lately. I don’t mean that I’m feeling very mature lately or anything like that. It’s just that it’s weird to think about the fact that it was 10 years ago that I was 18. Or 15 years ago when the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series. I can remember those things like it was yesterday. When I read the other week that Delirious? are breaking up, it nice of shocked me again. I mean, I remember when my brother and I first heard “Did You Feel the Mountain

LISTENING TO THE "COUNTRY"
In this age of satellite radio and iPods, it's possible to completely control your personal soundtrack. Through these technologies and others, we can design playlists that receive us from the morning alarm to our final lullabies without the intrusion of any tune that hasn't been pre-selected. And while that's every okay, I'm a big fan of being surprised, even ambushed by music I haven't heard before. And when I'm travelling, I also like to receive a read on what the locals are liking by giving the dashb

Website Information
So I’ve moved my domains, renewed my hosting and dropped an old domain. That’s a lot of work to take care of in a few weeks and is harder then one might think. Loss of data, updates and upgrades, software installation. These things take time. One project though is coming close to completion. A Dragon’s Tale is going to be a collection of my poetry, short stories, non-fiction essays, tune lyrics and digital art and photography. The parent site looks like crap. I really need to work on it.
